It has been two months since the First Step Act, legislation designed to help prisoners become work-ready once they are released from prison, was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump.
“Our goal should be to increase public safety,” said Jessica Jackson Sloan, co-founder of #Cut50, a bipartisan organization that supports The First Step Act and works to cut crime and incarceration. “Anybody who goes to prison is going to need access to rehabilitative programming and access to incentives so they can complete the program.” She continued, “It creates a risk and needs assessment when they come into the prison so they can be matched to the right programming they need, and when they come home they are in a better position to succeed.”
