Watching the Oscars this Sunday? Don’t put your money on “Mad Max Fury Road” to win Best Picture, but definitely watch it if you haven’t yet.
“Fury Road” is a thrill ride that probably wouldn’t have been nominated under the old order where only five movies could be nominated for Best Picture. It’s too fun, too action-packed and way too weird.
But luckily, the Academy opened up the Best Picture category to up to 10 nominations in time for the 2010 Oscars – a practice that has allowed more “mainstream” (i.e.fun) movies to be included, such as “Inception” in 2011 and “The Martian” this year.
Hands down, “Fury Road” is the most fun nominee in the category this year and a remarkably feminist entry into the bargain. Its storyline centers on a band of women fighting for their freedom – the runaway wives of villain Immortan Joe. This is the kind of movie that passes the Bechdel test with ease and leaves it far behind in its portrayal of powerful women–which is the way it should be.

Paradox blog began as a way to give voice to those whose thoughts and ideas don't fit neatly into narrative. The misfits, the "in-betweens," the people who come under fire from every political front. We think a dose of sincerity goes further than all the hot takes in the world. We are a space where ideas can breathe, take on nuance, contain multitudes. http://theparadoxproject.org/about/
