GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump wrote an open letter to addressing comments made in the media by Pope Francis saying he was “Not Christian.” According to NBC News, Pope Francis made the comments during a news conference on a flight heading to the Vatican. The Catholic church leader made the comment in regards to Trump’s idea of building a wall between the United States and Mexico to stop illegal immigrants from entering.
Trump, who has been leading in the polls among GOP candidates, posted an open letter about the issue on his Facebook page.
“If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated, unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians,” Trump said in the statement.
He went on in the letter to address his religious beliefs: “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as president I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current president… ”
The conclusion of Trump’s letter made mention of the Pope being used as a “Pawn” in the media.
Trump supporters also went on social media in his defense. Some supporters posted pictures of the Vatican, where an ancient wall that divides the church from the city stands. Trump retweeted the photos on his Twitter account.
Heading into the South Carolina Primary, Trump has maintained his lead. According to a poll by Public Policy Polling, Trump is leading GOP candidates with 35 percent. Senator Marco Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz are tied for second with 18 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich is at 10 percent. Former Gov. Jeb Bush and Dr. Ben Carson are tied for last place with seven percent.
