Singer Joy Villa made headlines last February when she arrived on the red carpet at the Grammys dressed head to toe in a “Make America Great Again” gown. Now, Joy has debuted her newest Trumpesque song. Titled “Make America Great Again!,” the single champions that “we can come back twice as strong.”
On Bold TV, Joy said her song is a way to demonstrate “patriotism and love” for the country without “knocking anyone else.” She spoke out against the violence and bullying that has polarized parties over the past year, and argued that art can help foster discussion.
“My responsibility [as an artist] is to bring that light out, and that’s what I’m hoping that this song does,” Joy said. The singer wants the American people to envision a brighter, not bleaker future.
Though now a Trump-supporter, the singer once backed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. She said that amidst negative headlines about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016, she felt that Bernie Sanders would be “the guy who [was] going to make change.” But, the singer added, she “quickly realized that he [was] not, for me.” Joy readjusted her position to become “a middle-conservative person.”
Joy also commented on Trump’s activity on Twitter. The appropriateness of Trump’s tweets have been subject to much debate over the past year; Joy said that they are a “radical” but not a “horrible” example for the American people. While some tweets can be offensive, Joy said, people should understand Trump’s personality and intentions.
“He’s a New Yorker; he’s always been loud-mouthed; he’s been a celebrity for a long time,” Joy said. “I think he does a lot of the stuff on purpose because he knows it’s going to offend a lot of people.”
