In just five days, nearly 27,000 people have signed a progressive advocacy group’s petition calling on the Democratic National Committee to remove its chairwoman, Rep. , from her position due to her support of 2016 hopeful Hillary Clinton.
RootsAction alleges the Florida congresswoman has skewed the Democratic primaries in favor of the former secretary of state.
“In addition to her recent attempt to deny the Bernie Sanders campaign access to its own voter files, Wasserman Schultz has tried in other ways to minimize competition for her candidate, Hillary Clinton,” the Washington-based group wrote in the petition. “She has done this by scheduling very few primary debates, and scheduling them at times of low TV viewing.”
The group accused Wasserman Schultz of only agreeing to “corporate and/or incompetent moderators” that have failed focus on topics including the Trans Pacific Partnership and climate change.
“That Wasserman Schultz agrees to such debates might be expected from her own performance in Congress, where she has served as a pro-militarist and corporatist tool of the high bidders,” its team said in an email Tuesday encouraging people to sign and donate to the cause. “Among recent disgraceful acts was her vote to enable racial discrimination in car-buying.”
The Sanders campaign recently filed a lawsuit against the DNC for showing Clinton preference in the race by blocking the Vermont senator from gaining access to party data – which has since been restored since legal action was taken.
The DNC did not respond to a request for comment.
