Today marks the 25th anniversary of my family’s move to the US from the former USSR (Moscow). My family left everything they knew and everything they had built for the total unknown, with one mission: to provide me (an only child) with an opportunity to live in a free world, where I could stand for what I believe openly and without fear. I will never fully comprehend where my mom got so much courage and conviction. I don’t know that I could do what she did.
As my family celebrates this momentous date that changed the course of our lives forever, I can’t help but reflect on all the friends I’ve made along the way. It is all of you who have led me, guided me, supported me, comforted me, encouraged me, taught me, stood by me, and through your own lives and choices modeled for me as I’ve made my way down the winding road that has been this life’s journey.
Thanks to all of you and our great nation for making my family’s sacrifice and courage 100% worth it. For all its challenges, the United States remains an incredible nation. We must protect it, celebrate it, improve it, and deeply love it. It’s our home and even in the midst of so much tragedy that surrounds us daily globally, I am convinced that the US remains a shining star.
