What do Bernie Sanders and President Donald Trump supporters have in common? Grassroots voters on the left feel just as angry and ignored by the mainstream media as Trump voters do, according to Cenk Uygur, the founder and host of The Young Turks. In a wide-ranging interview with Bold TV, Uygur said he believes there is a media bias against anti-establishment candidates. He told us:
“What the establishment candidates have and the guys with all of the money, the corporate candidates, whether they are Democrats or Republicans, what they have is the media on their side.”
When asked about Democrats’ chances to take back the White House in 2020, Uygur said there was only one viable progressive candidate: Bernie Sanders. Uygur said there was significant evidence “in the numbers and the polls,” that Sanders would defeat Trump and yet leaders of the political establishment remain in denial. Uygur said “Bernie Sanders is the most popular politician in the country, and Washington keeps saying, ‘I won’t believe my lying eyes.’ They almost sound like Donald Trump in their refusal to believe in facts.”
Uygur said the reason the political and media establishment can’t comprehend the popularity of Sanders is because Washington and New York are extremely wealthy areas and “they don’t feel the pain of the rest of the country.”
Although both Sanders and Trump have become anti-establishment figures, Uygur said he couldn’t fathom ever supporting Trump as “nothing on this planet could get me to support that guy, who is both a monster and a total and complete idiot.”
When pressed by Bold TV host and founder Carrie Sheffield about this sort of rhetoric potentially offending blue-collar people who voted for Trump, Uygur said there was an important distinction to be made between the voters that Hillary Clinton once referred to as “deplorables” and voters simply fed up with the status quo. Uygur said:
“The best thing that Hillary Clinton ever said is the one she gets the most criticism for. She said half of Trump supporters are deplorables and they are. The other half are just frustrated and that’s true. That half we can definitely get because we have real answers for them.”
