During a closed-door meeting last Friday, President Barack Obama reportedly told a group of Democratic donors that it’s time to rally around Hillary Clinton, despite the weaknesses she displays as a presidential candidate.
According to a report from The New York Times, Obama’s comments came during a Democratic National Committee fundraising event in Austin, Texas and have been separately confirmed by three anonymous sources.
Obama explained that the fact that Democrats are not “excited” by the prospect of another Clinton presidency stems from the fact that she appears less “authentic” than her opponent from Vermont.
The Times also noted its sources “described an urgency in Mr. Obama’s tone as he suggested that Democrats needed to come together to prevent” Republican front-runner Donald Trump from winning the presidency.
Currently, Clinton leads Sanders by 755 delegates. She needs to earn 777 more to be named the Democratic nominee.
