“There’s something special about him, the way he communicates, the way he expresses policy points — not just by looking at the facts and figures but also adding in the human element,” Lerner said of O’Rourke’s mainstream appeal. Lerner praised O’Rourke for his ability to disagree with the President without “sinking to his level.”
Despite O’Rourke’s popularity within the Democratic Party, Lerner said he foresees the former Congressman having similar issues with Democratic voters that some of the other nominees are currently experiencing. For example, Senator Kamala Harris’s prosecution record is being called into question just as Senator Sanders’ voting record on gun control was in 2016.
“If you bring this purity test to the Democrats and say ‘Okay, you have to be perfect on this and this and this,’ every single one of them is gonna fail,” Lerner said of the high standard that many Democratic voters hold for the current nominees. Lerner warns against Democratic voters falling “through this trap” of seeking a perfect leftist candidate.
O’Rourke has many fans in the Democratic Party, but was unable to defeat Senator Ted Cruz in Texas last November. Is he ready for the national stage?
