Now more than ever, our country seems divided. Schools like American University have begun to take action to combat this, by piloting civil discourse classes to teach students and faculty how to disagree without fighting. Nicki Neily from Independent Women’s Forum shared her thoughts on the subject and told us, “I think it’s encouraging that this is the market, really stepping in and saying this is a skill that we want our students to learn.”
She was joined by Deb Mashek, executive director at Heterodox Academy. Neily expanded on the work that Mashek and Heterodox do to encourage open discussion:
“I’m such a fan of Deb and Heterodox Academy because one of the things that they promote…is the importance of intellectual diversity. So, if you can’t have people who are talking to others from different points of view civilly, what is the point of university at all?”
