Michael Steele, Former Republican National Convention Chairman and Former Lt. Gov. Maryland, joined Bold TV and addressed the comments made by Ian Walters, Conservative Political Action Conference Communications Director at a CPAC dinner last Friday.
“I’m all about patching up. I don’t like this rip in the party…. I joined the party a long time ago. And have been in a constant fight both within and outside the party. I’m trying to adhere to some core principles and values that I think matter to people. And I believe still matter today. So that’s the fight I want to have.”
Steele called the incident a “moment of stupid.” He said it felt “a little bit orchestrated” and said “I’ve been very critical of the way a lot of this administration has unfolded in the last year and a half.” He added, “I don’t know why I would come up at a CPAC conference eight years after my chairmanship.”
Walters made headlines last week for his controversial comments at CPAC about Michael Steele: “We elected Mike Steele to be the RNC chair because he’s a black guy. That was the wrong thing to do.” Walters responded to the pushback he received in an op-ed for The Hill.
