Bold TV asks: Is President Trump at war with the press? With the White House’s exclusion of several news publications from press briefings last week, and Trump referring to the media as the “enemy of the people,” it certainly seems like there’s a war going on.
Bold TV sat down with a liberal reporter and a conservative reporter to talk “fake news,” liberal bias in the media, Trump’s rocky relationship with the press and more.
Our hosts, Carrie Sheffield and Clay Aiken, were joined by Peter Sterne, a POLITICO Media reporter and Alexandra DeSanctis, a William F. Buckley Jr. Fellow in Political Journalism with the National Review Institute.
Our hosts and guest discussed Trump’s recent and common accusations about “fake news,” and what counts as fake news. Peter commented that Trump seems to call anything he doesn’t like “fake news.”
The panel also discussed the makeup of newsrooms; that journalists are often liberal and come from privileged backgrounds. Carrie pointed out that perhaps this is why the media seems so out of touch with Trump voters. Peter addressed the issue of bias in the media:
“You say that the mainstream media has a slight liberal bias and certainly this has been a concern for a while, but I feel like Trump takes it to a different level. You’re not even talking about a slight liberal or conservative bias. You’re talking about true reporting that may be slightly biased versus just totally untrue lies.”
Both Peter and Alexandra agreed on the importance of the press. Peter stressed the importance of the media to have professional reporters telling the truth to the public. He said even if you think CNN or The New York Times is somewhat biased, “they are certainly less biased than Donald Trump, who has said things that are demonstrably untrue.”
Alexandra said she believes the “fake news” allegations are a political move on Trump’s part:
“I think he knows that’s where his power comes from; he knows that a lot of Americas are just fed up with everything, whether it’s government or the media. So he says, I am the solution, look to me, I have the answers, everyone else is the enemy.”
We also talked about the lack of diversity in newsrooms, the recent White House press exclusion, click-bait/social media as a news source and more. We want to hear from you! Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Come back this Friday for another bold discussion!
