The red robes from Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” have gone beyond the TV show, surfacing at Comic Con, political protests, and Halloween parties. And costume designer Ane Crabtree doesn’t know how it happened.
Crabtree, nominated for two Emmys for her work on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” told Bold Life, “It’s so fulfilling to have people in the audience who love the show, but somehow the costumes become this kind of extra layer for them. And I’m sincerely not sure how that happened.” She added, “They seem to take the costumes and make it their own.”
Crabtree told host Diana Falzone that she didn’t even know it had become a “pop culture thing” until recently. She said she has been so wrapped up in her work for the past few years, she’s just now catching up with the news and pop culture, and seeing fan reactions.
