Hundreds of young black conservatives met with President Trump and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson at the White House as part Turning Point USA’s Young Black Leadership Summit (YBLS), a conference this weekend for African-American leaders between the ages of 15 and 35. The Republican Party has long struggled to attract black voters, with no Republican receiving more than 10 percent of the African-American vote since 1960. President Trump received 8 percent of the black vote and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney received 6 percent in 2012, John McCain 4 percent in 2008.
What better way to kick off the day than to have @staceydash speak to a room full of young black conservative leaders? #YBLS2018 @TheOfficerTatum @charliekirk11 @RealCandaceO @conservatyler @TPUSA pic.twitter.com/YqwfhZWSbM — Jonathan Williams (@jwphotographyaz) October 27, 2018

Turning Point USA’s Candace Owens announced the kickoff of a “Blexit,” campaign of black voters exiting the Democratic Party, using a line of clothing with a new logo. This year, African-American unemployment fell to a record low of 5.9 percent, African-American employment increased by 976,000 since President Trump’s election and stands at a record high while the poverty rate for African-Americans reached its lowest level on record in 2017. The question remains whether heading into the midterm elections will reflect President Trump’s increase in polling among black voters this year.
