Millennials are known to put off starting families and moving out, but when they choose to move out, they usually choose to rent rather than buy. Choosing to rent an apartment has led to many millennials putting up with home providers who take advantage of them. Luckily, there is a new startup that helps millennials avoid crooked landlords.

The growing problem

An increasing number of millennials are choosing to rent rather than purchase a home usually because they can’t afford a mortgage. Many feel that they might be stuck renting for the rest of their lives, which creates the fear that landlords will continue to take advantage of them. Millennials frequently have to put up with housing deposit scams, unsafe electricity wiring, and even filthy bathrooms.

Recently, a new startup named Whose Your Landlord was launched to help raise awareness of this growing issue while also holding landlords accountable.

Whose your landlord

Whose Your Landlord was launched in 2013 with the intention of connecting quality renters with quality home providers. The web platform keeps up-to-date listings, home-provider reviews and verified renter information, allowing renters as well as landlords to know a little more about each other.

The main goal of Whose Your Landlord is to create an environment for landlords and rentersbased on accountability, transparency and efficiency. Renters have the ability to search through available listings in their desired areas while viewing home providers’ reviews, and easily submit inquiries to the home providers through the website itself.

How does it help?

Aside from providing millennials with the tools they need to find a decent landlord, Whose Your Landlord also manages a blog with topics ranging from how to organize your apartment after the holidays to the issues surrounding the United States public housing system. Whose Your Landlord focuses not only on helping renters find better homes, but also on educating people about the current issues surrounding housing.

Takeaway

For millennials, renting is not easy; many have to put up with landlords who take advantage of them simply because they can. Whose Your Landlord is a great startup that will help bridge the gap between landlords and renters while providing millennials with the resources they need to find higher quality housing.
