Last week on Bold TV, we dug deep into the healthcare reform bill that will likely replace Obamacare. We had voices from both liberal and conservative organizations give us their take on what’s being called Trumpcare.
Andrea Flynn, a fellow at a progressive think tank, The Roosevelt Institute, joined us in studio along with Paul Howard, the Director of Health Policy for The Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank. Rachel Bovard, the Director of Policy Services from The Heritage Foundation, also joined us over Skype. The Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank who has come out against the healthcare reform bill.
Dave Hoppe, Former Chief of Staff to House Speaker Paul Ryan, also Skyped into the conversation and gave us an overview on the American Health Care Act, (AHCA)’s goal:
“The purpose of this bill is to change the direction of health care delivery in the United States from a [government] function, to a doctor-patient, market-oriented relationship…That’s what their trying to do.”
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) published a report analyzing the AHCA last week, and it showed that millions would lose their health insurance under Trumpcare. Andrea pointed out this as one of the main concerns of Americans:
“As we saw in the CBO report that came out this week, many people would actually lose coverage. We saw the cost would likely go up for the majority of Americans. So I think what’s difficult is that once you have health care and you have health coverage, you don’t want to lose it.”
Paul Ryan said in an interview Sunday that the new health care bill is likely to go to the floor this week for a final vote. Will we start seeing the effects of Trumpcare soon?
It’s difficult to predict exactly how the bill will play out. The GOP wants less government mandates and more competition in the health market to result in lower overall health insurance costs. Whether or not they can deliver on their promises will be revealed as soon as the bill is presented for a final vote this week.
